Thanks to ‘Off Campus’ for making this change in Elle Kennedy’s books

High quality videos Off campus made several major changes to Elle Kennedy’s college hockey series.
It is primarily based on A feastthe most popular Off-Campus first book series, Season 1 of the TV adaptation ditches Hannah’s (Ella Bright) diva partner Cass, turns Justin (Josh Heuston) from a football player into a hit singer, and skips Allie (Mika Abdalla) and Dean’s (Stephen Kalyn) romance early. (As it is, it starts two full seasons earlier than I thought it would.)
‘Off Campus’ review: This college hockey romance is really exciting
This change from the source story is very good for the plot, but there is one small change in the ending that can lead to another A feastMistakes are very toxic. I’m talking about Garrett’s (Belmont Cameli) “campus-wide hands off rule.”
In A feastGarrett’s father Phil (Steve Howey) criticizes Hannah for breaking up with Garrett. (Thank you, Off campus she cuts this cookie-cutter hint of evil entirely in favor of a breakup driven by Garrett and Hannah’s own worries.) When Hannah breaks up with Garrett in the book, she suggests that she needs to see other people. In response, she forbids any Briar University man from dating or contacting her.
The move plays on a classic romantic trope: that of the bossy boyfriend. In accordance with A feastGraham is only doing this to protect Hannah. He knows he doesn’t know indeed she wants to see someone other than him, so why not speed up the process and get her back to him as soon as possible?

But what A feast it raises as an act of love actually a wave of red flags. Garrett’s “law” removes any agency from Hannah following the forced separation, where she already had very little agency to begin with. With this command, he removes him from the large group of people around him, declaring him his place in the system. I don’t care if you’re meant to be the romantic hero here! Doing this is controlling and humiliating, and brings him closer to his abusive father than any hockey fight ever has.

Off campus deftly navigates this sinister minefield in its season finale, tricking viewers with Garrett’s hands-off rule before delivering a sweet, romantic feel.
The story of the hands-off rule plays out on TV the same way it does in a book. The Briar U men run when they first see Hannah, and when she finds out why, she goes into the locker room to give Garrett a piece of her mind. (Yes, just like in the book, there are a lot of penises on display.) She rightfully calls him out on how dangerous his rule is, to show that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
It turns out that the hands-off rule was actually the result of a campus phone game. Dean said he thought Garrett would lose his shit if Hannah dated someone else, the younger members of the group assumed he meant he would beat up anyone who dated Hannah. Rumors do otherwise.
“I’ll never tell anyone to stay away from you,” Garrett tells Hannah when they settle their differences. “You should be with whoever you want to be with.”
That statement is in stark contrast to the actions of Garrett’s book, and it’s refreshing. Here, he honors Hannah and her servant. In that Off campus is a show about their romance, it’s clear that the person she wants to be with is Garrett. However, he doesn’t allow her to go on that journey back to him.
That Off campus still keeping the mention of the hands off rule in the show proves to be a wise practice choice. It allows for the inclusion of the fan-favorite locker room scene and gives Hannah a chance to properly vindicate herself. It also provides a contrast between the kind of jerk Garrett can be and the kind of person he really is.
Throughout the season, Garrett has struggled with one big question: What kind of hockey player does he want to be? The kind who get into fights and showboats for glory? Or the kind that works with and respects his team? The hands-off rule is the first type of move a hockey player can make. Respecting Hannah’s boundaries is what the second would do. That Garrett chose the latter option, avoiding the stereotypes of toxic men in the process, is a huge win for the TV adaptation.
