BTS releases limited edition hoteok-flavored Oreos for 13 years – National

Pop sensation BTS is releasing a limited-edition Oreo cookie, created by the band, featuring special designs and a new flavor to celebrate the group’s 13th anniversary.

In a nod to classic South Korean street food, BTS cookies are flavored like brown sugar cookies and filled with sweet cream, with a purple wafer to honor the band’s loyal fans.

BTS designed all 13 cookie embossments, which include their names, a BTS light stick and three collectible cookies that form a message from the K-pop celebrity.

The group’s fans are known for their tradition of writing letters, often communicating with each other through written words, a lore of fandom that Oreo says includes the introduction of a special edition cookie.

The QR code on the package will allow fans to write digital letters to the team, who will be able to read each other’s names and contribute to a large letter of love from fans around the world.

“BTS brought a lot of heart and purpose to creating these cookies, from sharing the taste of their Korean roots through hotteok-inspired flavors to designing special embossments dedicated to their fans,” said Peter Verlinden, director of cookies, Mondelēz Canada.

Mondelēz told The Associated Press that Oreo spent nearly two years making the BTS cookie, eventually whittling down about three flavors before settling on the hotteok.

“I think Korean food is amazing food. I’m French, maybe I shouldn’t say that, but I believe it,” he joked.

Social media promotes an international flavor. There are more than 11,700 videos on TikTok under the hashtag “hotteok,” for example. Foraging for global food or learning how to make it is a low-risk and inexpensive way to enjoy other cultures, Russell Zwanka, director of the food marketing program at Western Michigan University, told the AP.

“You can experience the world without spending $2,000 on a ticket,” added Zwanka.

The group’s collaboration with the cookie brand comes just weeks after BTS were unveiled as headliners in the first-ever FIFA World Cup semi-final, alongside Madonna and Shakira.

FIFA said that the final match to be held at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on July 19 will include the Super Bowl.

The governing body said the show will support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which is raising US$100 million to help children get education and soccer.

The show will be hosted by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who announced the news in a video Sesame Streetit’s Elmo.

Earlier this year, Oreo also teamed up with Marvel to release packs featuring The Avengers, Spider-Man., the X-Men and The Fantastic Four with illustrations by Marvel Comics artist Todd Nauck.
